WHAT IS AN ON-SITE WASTEWATER SYSTEM?
On-site wastewater solutions are decentralized
systems that collect, treat and dispose of wastewater via land-based
technologies. They range from conventional septic systems including
primary treatment and land-discharge of septic tank effluent to advanced systems
including tertiary treatment, disinfection and drip-irrigation of
recycle quality effluent.
An advanced On-Site Wastewater System (OSWS) is an engineered treatment and
disposal system designed for land-based disposal of highly treated
septic tank effluent. Usually includes proprietary treatment with
either drip irrigation or low-pressure pumping (LPP) of effluent. May
also include disinfection and treated effluent storage depending on
project and State requirements.
WHEN TO USE AN ADVANCED OSWS?
- When Soils are Unsuitable for a Conventional Septic System
- When Design Flows are Too Large for Conventional Septic
- When Surface Water Quality is a Concern - common to
Lakefront or
Shorefront Communities
- At Remote Sites - too far from Public Sewer
- To Repair Failing Systems
- When an NPDES Direct Stream Discharge is not Desirable
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AN ADVANCED OSWS?
- Makes Presently Un-Developable Sites Developable
- Avoids Costly NPDES Permits
- Minimal O&M Costs
- Works on Individual Lots, entire Subdivisions, and
Commercial/Institutional Development
